Global Protests For Hijab Rights
Justice For All’s “Global Protests for Hijab Rights” campaign spotlights the challenges faced by Muslim women in India, particularly in Karnataka, where directives have barred them from wearing the hijab in educational institutions. This move has been criticised as an infringement on constitutional rights and religious freedoms, especially since other religious symbols remain permitted .
In response, a series of peaceful protests were organised globally in February 2022, uniting communities in cities like Teaneck, Johannesburg, Cambridge, New York City, Chicago, and Bellevue. These demonstrations aimed to show solidarity with Indian Muslim women and to oppose the hijab ban. The protests were part of Justice For All’s broader “Save India” campaign, which seeks to combat Islamophobia and advocate for the rights of minorities in India .
Justice For All continues to encourage international support through petitions, volunteer opportunities, and advocacy efforts, emphasising that the right to wear the hijab is a fundamental human right.
Why This Matters:
Across the world, Muslim women are facing increasing restrictions and targeted oppression for their choice to wear the hijab. In places where freedom of religion and expression should be fundamental rights, these women are being denied the ability to practice their faith and live authentically. Their dignity, security, and agency are under threat, and their resistance is a powerful stand for justice and equality.
The struggle for hijab rights is not just a women’s issue—it’s a human rights issue. It’s about the right to choose, the right to safety, and the right to participate fully in society. When governments and institutions impose bans, enforce discriminatory policies, or turn a blind eye to violence against hijab-wearing women, they send a message that religious freedom is conditional and human rights are negotiable.
